  • Dr. Atanu Kumar Jana is a distinguished neonatologist and paediatrician with over 40 years of experience. He currently leads the neonatal unit at Manipal Hospitals in Mukundapur, Kolkata. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 1978 from Punjab University in Chandigarh. He then went on to pursue an MD in Paediatrics in 1983 and a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) in 1981, both from the same university. He also earned a fellowship in Neonatology from Sydney, Australia, broadening his expertise in the fields of Paediatrics and Neonatology.

  • Throughout his four decades-long career in Paediatrics and Neonatology, Dr. Jana has made significant contributions to the field and demonstrated an unshakeable commitment to improving the care of children. He began his career at West Bengal Health Service (WBHS), based out of District Hospital, Suri, where he developed his clinical abilities and reaffirmed his dedication to Neonatology. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in setting up paediatric services in the district and other smaller hospitals in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). He later joined as a resident medical officer (RMO) at Bidhan Chandra Roy Memorial Hospital & Research Centre and was later promoted to a lecturing post. His contributions were recognised by the National Neonatology Forum, earning him an opportunity to receive training in advanced Neonatal Care at Westmead Children’s Hospital, Sydney. He was the first young paediatrician among the six to be awarded this distinguished training opportunity.

  • Dr. Jana’s commitment to advancing Neonatal Care was further demonstrated when he built one of India’s largest, most advanced, and most modern neonatal care units at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. In addition to propelling Neonatal Care standards in India, Dr. Jana was a dedicated leader and a mentor. He served in many prominent roles, including Head of Department (HOD) of Child Health, professor of Paediatrics and Neonatology, and Associate Director of CMC, Vellore. He also played a significant role in shaping Neonatology Care across Southeast Asia and developing Neonatal Care in various countries like Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka through a decade-long collaboration with the WHO. Dr. Jana is also a dedicated researcher, having published over 150 papers in many national and international journals. He has also presented his original papers at various conferences, both within the country and abroad. Moreover, he was the editor of the 2004 WHO manual, ‘Managing Newborn Problems - A Guide for Doctors, Nurses, and Midwives’.

He has helped state governments and many prominent universities set up Post-doctoral (DM and Neonatal Fellowship) teaching programmes.
