Dr.Vishal Rao is presently the Regional Director - Head Neck Surgical Oncology and robotic surgery and the Associate Dean for Centre of Academic Research at HealthCare Global (HCG) Cancer centre Bangalore, India. He is a TEDx speaker and inventor of the Aum Voice Prosthesis a 1$ speaking device for throat cancer patients - an innovation that has been considered among the 100 global social innovations across the globe and received wide recognition from BBC, Harvard Business Review and Forbes. He has more than 18 patents filed for his innovations on medical devices, drugs, techniques and theories. He is a member of consultative group to Principal Scientific Advisor, Govt of India.
He has been conferred the Honorary FRCS by the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow recognizing his contributions. He is the recipient of the Judy Wilkenfeld award for Global excellence in tobacco control 2017. He has been recipient of several awards - Kempegowda Award - highest civil award conferred by the Bengaluru Corporation, the Varshada Kannadiga Award 2018 (Kannadiga of the Year) for his contributions in Science and Technology. Rotary vocational training award 2016 for inventing the voice prosthesis for his throat cancer patients.
He is presently editor of Journal of precision oncology and has more than 100 national and international publications to his credit, and is a reviewer for 10 international journals. He is an international advisor to World Health Organisation Tobacco Free Initiatives (Bloomberg) partners in collaboration with state and union government to implement the WHO FCTC- Framework convention for Tobacco Control through National Tobacco control program.
He has been a visiting faculty to John Hopkins University leadership programs. He is a member of High Powered committee on tobacco control and cancer control Govt of Karnataka. He is also member of NCD Task for Bengaluru city. He is also the Incharge coordinator union for international cancer control at HCG.
He serves as the Chair of Ethics committee on Biotech with govt of Karnataka, Dept of IT & BT and member of ICMR ethics committee. He also serves as a board of trustee for Namma Bengaluru Foundation which recognises unsung heroes each year and the Sathya Sai Trust (Karnataka). His training was at prestigious Tata Memorial hosptial and brief stint at Pittsburgh as visiting scholar.
Dr. Rao serves as the Group Director – Head & Neck Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery at HCG Cancer Centre, Bengaluru. He is also the Dean of the Centre for Academic Research at HCG Academics, indicating his dual role in clinical care and surgical education / research.
His professional experience spans more than two decades (over 20 – 25 years) in head and neck surgical oncology and complex interventions of the throat/neck/voice region.He has managed thousands of cases of both benign and malignant tumours in the thyroid, parotid & salivary glands, larynx/voice box, neck dissections, carotid body tumours, parapharyngeal space tumours, and other vascular neck lesions.
