Dr. Upal Sengupta is a director of Team Nephrology & Consultant - Nephrology & Kidney Transplant at Manipal Hospitals, Mukundapur. With over 17 years of clinical experience, Dr. Sengupta is recognised for his clinical acumen, particularly in complex Kidney Transplantation and Critical Care Nephrology.  Dr. Sengupta completed his MBBS, followed by an MD in Internal Medicine. He later earned a DM in Nephrology from PGIMER Chandigarh and underwent advanced training in ABO-incompatible Transplants in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Sengupta is also a fellow of the Indian College of Physicians (FICP). 

As a leading and well-known nephrologist in the region, Dr. Sengupta’s key focus areas include treating several complex kidney disorders. These include managing kidney failure in cardiac and liver disease patients and treating glomerular diseases (e.g., SLE and vasculitis). During his tenure, he has completed more than 200 Kidney Transplantations, including ABO-incompatible and highly sensitised transplants. His work also includes elderly kidney care, management of diabetes-related kidney disease at all stages, and CKM (Cardio-Kidney Metabolic) care. 

Over the years, Dr. Sengupta has held several key leadership roles. He served as the Head of the Department of Nephrology and has worked at many renowned institutions across Kolkata. His pioneering research on Stem Cell Therapy in glomerulonephritis has received international recognition. Moreover, he was invited to present at several national and global nephrology conferences. Dr. Sengupta chaired the Scientific Committee of the East Zone Conference of the Indian Society of Nephrology (ISNEZCON) 2024 and was the Co-organising Secretary of HOPECON 2025.

In addition, Dr. Sengupta has authored numerous publications in several national and international journals. Some of these include BMC Nephrology, Indian Journal of Nephrology,  and Journal of the Indian Medical Association, among others. His research spans diverse topics, from transplant outcomes and chronic kidney disease to emerging therapies like Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cell Infusion. Dr. Sengupta's clinical expertise has been widely recognised and celebrated. Notably, he received the Manav Seva Samman from the Governor of Chandigarh in 2012 for his service in the field.
