Dr. Pandurangan Basumani is a highly accomplished Senior Consultant in Medical Gastroenterology with over three decades of distinguished clinical, academic and interventional expertise. He completed his MBBS from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, securing university distinctions and gold medals, and went on to pursue MD in Internal Medicine at JIPMER, Puducherry, where he trained under eminent faculty and served as Senior Medical Resident. He later undertook advanced medical and gastroenterology training in the United Kingdom, serving as Lecturer and Senior Registrar at the University of Sheffield and completing Specialist Registrar Training across Chesterfield, Rotherham and Doncaster.
Dr. Basumani has held several prestigious roles during his tenure in the UK, including Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, where he made significant contributions to clinical governance, medical education, research, and service development. After returning to India, he continued his clinical practice in Chennai and joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College as Visiting Professor, later taking up roles as Assistant Professor and Senior Gastroenterologist. He subsequently worked at Rela Institute and Medical Centre as part of the advanced interventional gastroenterology team, gaining wide expertise in complex ERCPs, EUS, liver disease management and transplant-related endoscopic procedures.
An expert endoscopist, Dr. Basumani has performed over 5000 colonoscopies with high procedural success rates and extremely low complication rates. He is an accredited trainer in ERCP and colonoscopy, with extensive experience in managing inflammatory bowel disease, complex liver diseases, chronic diarrhoeal disorders, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux, coeliac disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding. He has led national audits, contributed to guideline development and played key roles in multidisciplinary teams both in India and the UK.
Dr. Basumani has held several leadership roles including Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology (South Yorkshire Deanery), Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology at TRFT, Royal College Tutor, Chair of Endoscopy Committees and member of Medical Ethics, Credentialing and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committees. He currently serves on scientific committees and continues to contribute to medical education as Adjunct Professor at The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, teaching postgraduate trainees and mentoring future specialists.
He is the recipient of multiple prestigious honours including University Gold Medals, Clinical Excellence Awards from the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, and the EMMI Lifetime Achievement Award. He serves as an MRCP PACES examiner, peer reviewer for leading journals, and has been actively involved in academic writing, clinical audits and research. His professional associations include the Association of Physicians of India, British Society of Gastroenterology, Royal College of Physicians of London, Indian Medical Association and the Indian Society of Gastroenterology.
